SUMMARY:Critical Heritage Studies in the Post-Socialist Space. Vulnerable Past Uncertain Future Institutionalization of Heritage in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Rock et mémoire collective en Russie et Biélorussie : entre marginalisation et légitimation\nRock and Collective Memory in Russia and Belarus: Between Marginalization and Legitimation \n\nAlexandra KOLESNIK (Bielefeld University) :\n«Rock\, Memory\, and Conflicts: The Heritagization of Soviet Rock Music in the Post-Soviet Space»\nThis paper examines the contested heritage of Viktor Tsoi\, the iconic Soviet rock musician whose memory remains central across the post-Soviet space. Since 1990\, fan memorials — walls\, plaques\, museums\, and concerts — have functioned as grassroots lieux de mémoire\, fostering transnational networks of remembrance. Yet over the past decade\, Tsoi’s legacy has been increasingly appropriated by the Russian state. His music and image have been reframed as patriotic heritage\, culminating in their militarized use after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine\, when his songs and image were mobilized in propaganda and Victory Day rituals. Drawing on interviews\, digital ethnography\, and fieldwork\, the paper situates this process of institutionalization within broader debates on authoritarianism and cultural resistance. It argues that the struggle over Tsoi’s legacy illustrates how popular culture becomes a contested political resource\, exposing the tension between bottom-up memory practices and state-driven heritage regimes. \n\nLizaveta LYSENKA (Kaiser-Friedrich-Wilhelm Universität Bonn) :\n«Soviet\, Western or Belarusian: Entanglements of Meaning and Heritagization of Music Band “Pesniary” before and\nafter 1991»\nThe Belarusian music band Pesniary began their career in 1969. The band’s music and visual style exemplify a complex interplay of Western\, Soviet\, and Belarusian cultural influences. In post-Soviet Belarus their music acquired the status of national heritage\, becoming a subject of debate within competing discourses on Belarusian national identity. These discourses emphasize selective aspects of the band’s significance within Soviet and Belarusian culture. The Belarusian state became the custodian of Pesniary’s legacy\, using it to reinforce the narrative that the Soviet past is the most (if not the only) significant period of Belarusian history. Meanwhile\, opponents of the state regime reimagined the band’s songs\, constructing a canon of national history in which Pesniary is the voice of the Belarusian people\, but without the Soviet element of their eclectic repertoire. In this narrative\, the « Westernness » of the band came to the forefront. This paper explores the antagonistic discourses of national identity\, comparing them to the Pesniary’s reception during the Soviet time to showcase how heritage discourse transforms popular music into a representation of the past.\n\nZoom  Inscription : aleksandra.kolesnik@uni-bielefeld.de\n\nProgramme_CHS_25-26

SUMMARY:Critical Heritage Studies in the Post-Socialist Space. Vulnerable Past Uncertain Future Institutionalization of Heritage in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Institutions et mouvements citoyens : l’héritage local de Moscou en mutation\nInstitutions and Grassroots Movements: The Changing Local Heritage of Moscow \n\nBoris STEPANOV (Université Paris Nanterre) :\n«Alternative Local Studies in Neoliberal Moscow: the Case of “Zabytye moryaki” Project» \nKraevedenie (local studies) reveals transformations in the post-Soviet space in the\ninterpretation of heritage and the range of agents and means of its creation .In Moscow\, we\nfound a vivid example of these transformations: the ‘new local studies’ that emerged in recent\ndecades have become deeply embedded in the metropolitan neoliberal culture. The casestudy\nof ‘Zabytye Moryaki’ (‘Forgotten Sailors’) artel — an independent group working in one\nof the semi-peripheral districts of the Russian capital — will serve as material for analysis of the\nsituation. We would like not only to discuss the possibilities of location-related kraevedenie\nwithin the Russian metropolis\, but also to analyse alternative strategies for work that address\nthe difficult past\, critically assessed urban policy and implement the ‘right to the city’.\nAlexei IZOSIMOV (University of Cambridge) :\n«Out of the Capital: Student-Led Restoration Initiatives in Late Soviet Russia» \nThis paper traces the history of voluntary and semi-voluntary participation in heritage\nrestoration and preservation in Moscow and beyond. Beginning with a handful of initiatives\nthat emerged in the second half of the 1960s\, these practices expanded significantly in the\n1970s–80s and spread across Soviet Russia.\nMoving beyond the conventional focus on professionals\, scholars\, and the intelligentsia\,\nI analyse non-professional participation and argue that Thaw-era youth — especially students\nin technical fields — were central to advancing the preservation agenda. Their activities\ndeveloped in close collaboration with older generations who carried pre-revolutionary cultural\nexperience and were eager to pass them on\, seeing the transfer of this experience as essential\nto safeguarding cultural heritage for the future.\nBy following the trajectory of these initiatives — from their Muscovite origins to their\nnationwide diffusion — the paper demonstrates how a movement born in the capital reshaped\nheritage activism across Soviet Russia\, laid the foundations for contemporary heritage NGOs\,\nand helped prepare the ground for modern volunteerism practices in contemporary Russia.\n\nZoom  Inscription : aleksandra.kolesnik@uni-bielefeld.de \nProgramme_CHS_25-26

SUMMARY:Séminaire "Critical Heritage Studies": « Patrimonialiser les pratiques de l’art contemporain\, au pays ou en exil\, de l’Asie centrale à l’Europe »
DESCRIPTION:— Dilda Ramazan (Eur’Orbem – CNRS / Sorbonne Université)\, Aitys\, Or The Central Asian Art Of Improvisation\, In Works Of Contemporary Artists\nAitys presents itself as a form of oral poetic joust\, improvised and performed through spoken word or song\, generally accompanied by a traditional musical instrument. It is a competition in which two performers confront each other in a dialogic exchange on themes proposed by the audience\, combining humorous retorts\, critical observations\, and philosophical reflections. Recognized in 2015 by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, aitys occupies an important place in the cultural life of Central Asia today. It is mobilized in a variety of contexts — from community celebrations to national events — and frequently serves as a vehicle for expression on contemporary social issues. This presentation proposes to examine a significant evolution in the role of aitys within current cultural dynamics. In particular\, it will analyze the tensions between\, on the one hand\, attempts by state institutions to depoliticize this art form\nand\, on the other\, its critical appropriation by contemporary artists\, who turn it into a space for contestation\, engaged creation\, and the reconfiguration of social imaginaries. \n— Razia Sultanova (Cambridge Muslim College & Université de Sarajevo)\, From Vision To Institution: Cultural Leaders And The Shaping Of Central Asian Musical Heritage\nThis paper examines the institutionalisation of Central Asian music in the post-Soviet era\, with particular attention to the interplay between state policy\, transnational networks\, and individual leadership. Since the early 1990s\, following independence\, cultural institutions across the region have expanded their capacity to host international events and participate in global cultural exchange. Kazakhstan has taken a leading role through structural reforms in higher education\, the Bolashak scholarship programme\, and the successful organisation of major international events such as the 2015 ICTM World Conference. Comparable initiatives in Uzbekistan — most notably the regular Sharq Taronalari\, Boysun Bahori\, and Raqs Sehri festivals\, the recent First International Contemporary Art Bukhara Biennale (2025)\, and the establishment of the Academy of Shashmaqam — and in Kyrgyzstan\, with large-scale projects such as Rukh Ordo and Ruh Sanaat\, reveal both regional emulation and competition. At the core of these developments lies the growing role of nonstate actors and cultural leaders\, alongside attempts to establish transnational governance structures (e.g.\, TURKSOY and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation) at the intersection of Western and local musical traditions. The study argues that the institutionalisation of music in Central Asia is not a linear process but a dynamic negotiation between state policy\, international cultural diplomacy\, and the visions of individual actors. This convergence has elevated the global visibility of Central Asian musical heritage and reshaped the region’s cultural identity on the world stage. \nPour recevoir le lien Zoom\, veuillez contacter : aleksandra.kolesnik@uni-bielefeld.de

SUMMARY:"Critical Heritage Studies": « Institutionnalisation de la littérature jeunesse en Ukraine et en Russie »
DESCRIPTION:Nous aurons le plaisir d’écouter (en anglais)\, puis de discuter (en anglais\, français\, ou autre) les communications suivantes : \n— Bella DELACROIX OSTROMOOUKHOVA (Sorbonne Université)\, Svetlana MASLINSKAIA (Université Grenoble Alpes)\, Cultural Policy\, Market Strategies: Children’s Literature and its Gatekeepers in Russia \nSoviet children’s literature was very diverse and prolific\, yet only a few authors and works are still not only published and read but also rank among the bestsellers of major commercial publishers. In the first part\, we will show how this ‘intangible heritage’ is incorporated into the reading practices of the parents and grandparents of child readers\, who are the core target audience of commercial publishers. However\, it was challenged by an entire ecosystem of independent publishing houses that implemented strategies to promote other forms of heritage: the alternative contemporary ‘world classics’ and new Russian-language literature\, which these publishing houses strive to promote as part of heritage.\nThroughout the 2010s\, and especially after 2022\, this conflict took on a political dimension\, in abroader context of the ideologization of everyday life in general\, and literature in particular. The ‘Soviet classics’ (the composition of which changed in relation to the bestsellers) became the moral standardand model to be adopted by the various actors supporting the state’s authoritarian policy. \n— Daria SEMENOVA (University of Warsaw)\, Guiding Adolescent Reading: Literary Curricula\, Evolving Canons\, and Cultural Memory in Post-Soviet Ukraine \nThis presentation starts from the premise that children’s and adolescent reading\, alongside school education\, plays a central role in socializing new generations into a cultural community. Through these channels\, young people learn what distinguishes their “imagined community” from others and how it has arrived at the present moment—that is\, they acquire a framework of cultural memory. While leisure reading selected by adults or by children themselves may vary\, state-approved humanities curricula serve as a key instrument through which students across a nation are introduced to a shared set of topics and interpretations of foundational historical and cultural narratives.\nThe presentation traces the evolution of the Ukrainian literature curriculum since independence\, examining how the canon—initially inherited from the Soviet period and mechanically expanded with previously censored texts—has changed over time. One notable development has been the inclusion of recently written works with contemporary settings that address questions of cultural memory through characters relatable to adolescent readers. This shift contrasts with earlier curricular models that relied primarily on texts from more distant historical periods\, which often required substantial contextualization to bridge the gap between students’ lived experience and the literary past. \nExceptionnellement\, cette séance se tiendra uniquement en ligne. \nPour recevoir le lien Zoom\, veuillez contacter : aleksandra.kolesnik@uni-bielefeld.de
